Available Species

Insectest offers a wide variety of species against which it can carry out its efficacy tests. While some of the species are bred in its own insectarium, others are obtained from partner laboratories or are collected in the field.

 

Mosquitoes

Culex pipiens

A ubiquitous and widely distributed mosquito species throughout the world, capable of breed in almost every standing water source. It is a potential vector of parasites and viruses such as West Nile virus (WNV).

Culex quinquefasciatus

Mosquito species widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, also known as the southern house mosquito. It is an important vector for many diseases, including different filariasis and West Nile virus.

Aedes albopictus

Mosquito species native to Asia but currently spread to many other parts of the world, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito. Its considered one of the most invasive mosquito. Furthermore, it is an important vector for diseases such as dengue fever and Zika.

Aedes aegypti

Mosquito species found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is an important vector for diseases such as yellow fever, Zika, and dengue fever.

Anopheles atroparvus

Mosquito species found in Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean region and widely distributed throughout Spain. It does not normally transmit pathogens, but it is considered the main vector of malaria.

Anopheles stephensi

Mosquito species found in the Middle East, South Asia, and East Africa. It is an important vector for malaria, especially in India.

Blackflies

Simuliidae

Blackflies are a family of diptera whose painful bite can cause significant economic losses due to their impact on livestock. In humans they are also very problematic due to the allergic reactions they cause.


In some parts of the world these insects act as vectors of onchocerciasis, also known as “river blindness”, which is not present in Spain.

Sandflies

Phlebotomus perniciosus

Sandfly species found in Mediterranean countries. It is an important vector for Leishmania infantum, the parasite that causes leishmaniasis in both humans and dogs.

Wasps

Vespula vulgaris

Wasp species widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America, also known as common wasp. Its painful stings might lead to severe allergic reactions in some people. Moreover, it is also capable of biting.

Flies

Musca domestica

Most common fly species in many climates around the world, also known as housefly. Its presence can be troublesome, and they can act as mechanical vectors of pathogens responsible for diseases such as salmonellosis.

Drosophila melanogaster

Also known as the fruit fly, it is a model organism widely used in biomedical research. It has been important in advancing our understanding of genetics and disease, as it has been used to study a range of human disorders.

Hermetia illucens

Fly species, commonly known as the black soldier fly, relevant due to the decomposer role of its larvae through conversion of organic materials into protein-rich biomass, thus potentially reducing environmental waste.

Stomoxys calcitrans

Fly species, commonly known as the stable fly, which can bite and feed on blood from mammals. This makes it a vector for various pathogens to both humans and livestock, posing health risks and economic concerns in affected regions.

Cockroaches

Blatta orientalis

Cockroach species, also known as oriental cockroach, which has predilection for settling in damp places rich in organic matter, making it a common pest in food storage places where they can contaminate food with different pathogens.

Blattella germanica

Cockroach species which reproduces faster than other urban cockroaches, also known as German cockroach. It feeds on a variety of food, making it a common pest capable of contaminating surfaces and foods with different pathogens.

Periplaneta americana

Cockroach species which usually feds on rotten and fermented food, also known as American cockroach. Due to its urban habitat and his food preferences, it is capable of spreading different pathogens.

Ticks

Ixodes ricinus

Tick species, commonly known as castor bean tick, found throughout Europe and to a lesser extent in other continents. Besides other mammals, it can bite humans, acting as a vector for a range of diseases such as Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus

Tick species, commonly known as brown dog tick, found throughout urban environments worldwide. It can bite humans, but it preferably feeds on dogs, acting as a vector for diseases such as canine ehrlichiosis and canine babesiosis.

Dermacentor reticulatus

Tick species predominantly found in grassy and wooded areas throughout Europe. It feeds on a wide variety of hosts, including dogs, cattle, and deer, and can act as a vector for pathogens such as Babesia canis and several Rickettsia species.

Hyaloma marginatum

Moths

Plodia interpunctella

Moth species, also known as Indianmeal moth, which are a common and difficult to eradicate grain-feeding pest around the world.

Tineola bisselliella

Also known as the common clothes moth, this species represents a common pest in human environments. This is because the larvae can derive nourishment from clothing, especially wool, but also many other fibres.

Bedbugs

Cimex lectularius

Bedbug species that usually inhabits hot, dry environments, appearing in homes throughout the world. It feeds on human blood, causing skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Ants

Lasius niger

Ant species found throughout Europe, as well as parts of America and Asia, commonly known as black garden ant. It is a nuisance pest primarily found in outdoor and garden environments.

Coleoptera

Tenebrio molitor

Coleoptera species, also known as mealworm beetle, with little or no impact on human health. However, its larvae are an important pest in the flour industry because they can devaluate the product.

Attagenus unicolor

Coleoptera species, also known as black carpet beetle, capable of feeding on a variety of materials and fabrics. It has not direct impact on human health, but it is considered a nuisance pest that can cause damage to fabrics, carpets, and other household items.

Mites

Dermanyssus gallinae

Ectoparasite of poultry which feeds on their blood, causing anemia, reduced egg production, and even death in severe infestations. It can also bite humans, causing skin irritation and mild rashes.

Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus

House dust mite species that thrives in warm and humid spaces, being the most frequent mite in these environments. It is a common cause of allergic reactions in humans, including asthma and allergic rhinitis.
